These images give a number of views from the Southern Edge looking past the cafe to the Grandstand and Gym beyond with the main entrance and technical rooms nestled in between.

Walkway

Walkway runs along the back of the site and not only links the site through to the park but it creates a varying threshold with the facades of the gym and community kitchen being able to be pealed back to allow a passerby to walk righ tthrough the heart of the activity with out disrupting it, or a chance to join it.

On an End of season celebration all these links and facades can be pealed back to directly link the gym, main entrance, kitchen and the park creating a large communial atmosphere and allowing small children with sausage sandwiches to run about the site in a myriad of ways whilst hiding from their friends all whilst still being directly linked to their parents in the gym or kitchen.

This breatheable exchange of building, walkway and community is only limited in its application through the users imagination. It allows for a school camp or sport team sleep over just as easily as a fete or fund raising day. The visual and physical link through these pathways is further increased with sandstone pavers running through the area and hinting at the origins of the site as it sits just metres from the beach.

Gymnasium

The Gymnasium is one of the key activity centres on the site and as such connects directly into the park, community kitchen, offices, store room and multiuse rooms as well as feeding into the grandstand and undercroft space beyond. It views directly onto the oval and the beach beyond.

the upper walkway provides entry to the Offices as well as provides a viewing platform for both the gym and oval as well as offering views to the beach. The two small multipurpose rooms are located up here so they are at once linked to the gym without interrfering with any activities that might be going on.

The Offices look directly into the gym and out through it into the wider community beyond it. They allow the workers to view and watch anyone approaching along the walkway as well as more directly interact with the space by opening up their glass facade when the office workers wish to do so. this feeds their office with a much greater supply of fresh air but also of life and space as it takes from the gym and the oval and community beyond.

The gym's smaller and larger gyms spaces can be joined (as shown in the images) to create one very large space which is large enough to hold a full sized regulation basketball match increasing the usefulness and life of the community centre as well as future possibilities.

The Community kitchen directly below the Offices can open up to the gym in the same way with the gyms facade being able to be pealed back also. This would allow for great community activities making use of both these spaces and increasing possible interactions and cross overs.

Main Entrance

The Main Entrance is split into two sections, the open air ope topped section which runs alongside the undercroft and grandstand, and the other being a sheltered approach through the underside of the AV and Technical rooms running alongside the gym and around the main staircase for the gym. When the gym is ope it also provides another entry to the gym or a spill out point for a community event.

From the Main Entrance one is also able to view along the walkway out into the park creating a more direct link to it as well as another alternative exit and entry route.

Undercroft and Cafe

These images show the progression from the main entry towards the Undercroft area and through to the cafe. The cafe is designed to spill out into the undercroft are on the lower level and allow for more interaction chances with the workshop, with the upper level being able to look out over it and along the street. On the other side there is a good view out onto the oval and patrons would be able to watch people as they entered or left the grandstand giving them a clue as to the life and activity going on next to them with which they do not have a direct connection.

The curved entry allows for passerbys to skim along its surface whislt presenting a generous and inviting entrance to possible customers. At night, lit up, it would act as one of the beacons of activity giving users a clear idea of hubs of activity.

Undercroft Edge

The Undercroft on the western edge houses not only the service areas but the flexible workshop which acts as a focal point for the local area with the outdoor seating for the cafe able to spill out around it. This linking of spaces would allow those who have attended classes in the workshop to stand around chatting before or after class and enjoy a coffee and each others' company as well as catch up on the last week's events. Grandstand Undercroft and Entry

The Grandstand undercroft contains multiple spaces as well as a blade system influenced by the exterior of Eduardo Souto De Moura's Estádio Municipal de Braga in Portugal. This area holds the General Storeroom, Cafe Storeroom and the toilets and change rooms which are not accessible from this edge.

The Entrance space alongside the undercroft area offers more links and possible pathways into the site.

The Flexible Workshop is nestled in the undercroft of the grandstand and views out upon the street edge and north towards the park. This reciprocal relationship changes over time with users of the space being able to watch those interacting with the site on an equal footing but at night time they are lit up just like the gym and attract viewers just as a latern would moths. It also acts as an anchor for activity on the site and gives visitors to the site a point of reference.

Grandstand and Cafe

The cafe sits on the southern edge of the site being permeable to both street edges and the oval.

Along the eastern edge of the grandstand, linking to the oval are the bathrooms, change rooms and general store room (for field equipment).

Under the grandstand is the workspace and is glazed along its northern and western sides.

Gymnasium

The gymnasium is situated to the north of the site, adjacent to the park. The northern façade will be sheltered with trees from the park as well as sun shading.

The structure attached to its western edge contains the offices upstairs and the break room and general purpose rooms down stairs.

on the southern edge is the main entrance to the site and the small gym space with the AV and other general rooms above.

These spaces wrapped around the gym are able to view into it and beyond it into the oval.

Architectural Influences

These three architects were my inspiration for detailing when looking at "The Edge" project for weeks 5-7. They provided me with further inspiration when redeveloping my design as they all approached grandstands and viewing areas in distinct and powerful ways, but they also are from a region which is heavily influenced by regional architecture and their buildings were more respondent (or resistant) to changes within the environment. As I wanted to look at an environmentally sustainable building(s) I drew upon some of the works by these architects.

I have not yet posted any images of these until I can find images which will not breach copyright.
They will be updated as I do.

Bubble Diagram of Spaces and Re-evaluation of Proposal

These images show the process of "going back to the drawing board" although keeping past lessons learnt to inform the new design proposal. The first image shows a bubble diagram which creates links between the different spaces, physical, visual and services. This process helped me to look at the brief as a set of buildings/spaces which would complement each other and how best to go about this.

I used the spaces required for the activities in the brief to create a set of shapes which could be used to compare to the current grandstand and site boundaries. These were arrayed firstly as the brief set them out then rearranged to see how much of the site it would cover. This crude arrangement does not take into account voids, circulation space or landscaping nor for the logical and aestheticly pleasing arrangement on site. It does allow one to see how much space could be required. It strengthens the argument for occupying two levels but strongly denounces the use of three levels, except possibly in small spaces where this could be required, such as a camera tower.

This process helped me to decide on the removal of the current grandstand. Its position on site, and space taken up the two biggest concerns. Due to its angle on the site the grandstand claimed a lot of land which could not be effectively used without a significant loss of land. Also its position right on the edge of the site caused problematic flows around it especially in it south-western corner which severely hampers site movement and wastes a lot of space in the process. Also less than half of the buildings foot print translated into seating area and as such used much more land than was necessary.

If the building was to be kept without the entrance building being kept it would in my view be a hypocrisy as both are a link to the past as much as each other. Neither exhibit a remarkable example of their type and with other much more important buildings in the local area heritage listed there would not be a strong need to keep this building. During the rugby season the oval is effectively cut in half with "temporary" structures erected for seating and television broadcasting and advertising requirements as well as a television tower built on the side of the current community centre. Since these buildings remain for over four months it can not be argued they are temporary but merely seasonal.

If this building was of such importance this should not be allowed as it would demean the current buildings and clutter the visual landscape with ugly season structures. By rebuilding on the site the need for this might be reduced or even removed to allow the site and oval to be enjoyed year round without the disruption of the seasonal "temporary" structures.

Elevation and Section of the Site from the East Edge (Oval)

These Elevations and sections are meant to give an idea of the scale of the buildings in relation to each other and the internal layout of the Gymnasium/Offices. The ramped entrance to the gym can clearly be seen as can the varying heights of the internal slabs. This is to allow for a varying of conditions and spaces which would lend itself to different uses within the one building. This layout was considered when I was trying to create a single building which would house all of the new activities required but I believe I was too greatly influenced by the Structures and Construction course which we had been forced to integrate with our design. Instead I believe it informed the design to too greater an extent when the design should have informed the structural design and layout. I think the sequencing of Structural assignments as compared with Design assignments caused this narrowing of my design but I was still trying to address the ideas of the site and context but the proposal was far too rigid. I had to break that mindset and almost ignore the Structural element to further the design, although I would do so in a manner which was believable and able to be constructed.

Edge Conditions on the West Edge (Street)

Edge conditions looking at the Office/Gymnasium space and its entrance from the street edge. Columns are again set back from the façade but here the mezzanine slab protrudes the glass. There is a much different site condition on this edge as opposed to the oval side. This edge needs to be more human scale and approachable where as the oval edge creates a backdrop for the game and is much more in scale with the oval itself.

This also creates an opportunity for a human scaled entrance creating a warmer, friendly, more community based entrance rather than a façade which would be viewed from afar or over the television. Recessed lighting to illuminate the entrance and glass louvres to not only allow for natural ventilation but to open the building up allowing pedestrians to hear and sense what is happening within the gym space even if they are just passing by.

There is a greater slab overhang on this edge due to the late afternoon, Western Sun being so intense. This would be complemented with external, timber, screen shading on both levels to protect both levels but to also further emphasise the more human scale of this approach. It would also reduce the amount of light pollution spilling out of the building at night time along this edge which had a very high residential component, as opposed to the Eastern Edge which, although possessing screening, would allow more light to spill out to act as an attractant and a local beacon of life within the community and could be seen by those approaching the site by public transport making its location and the path to it more obvious.

Edge Conditions on the East Edge (Oval)

Edge conditions looking at the Gymnasium space and its lowered edge. This creates a flaying level which is at the same height as the sports field itself. This lends to the idea of reciprocity and insertion and infrastructure. Reciprocity between the two sporting arenas creating a threshold between the two which lends itself to the viewing of both, meaning a parent with children playing both on the field and in the gym could watch both perform meaning that one child didn't miss out over the other or that both parents could watch both children perform and spend the day together rather than one parent spending the day with one child and other with the second.

This gives them a greater chance to use the site to bond their family and making children's sport more enjoyable for all involved. After they could eat together at the cafe or watch the local rugby/cricket team in the afternoon. This idea would help to bond the community as more sections are able to interact with each other at the same time and provide a focus point for local activity.

The single glass façade appears to extend through the slab roof to create a viewing area so those that wish to view just the oval have an unimpeded view and a better one being higher up they can observe the play better. The depth across the site can be viewed and addressed with the change in the height of the retaining wall protecting the glass façade of the gymnasium. A seemingly floating mezzanine slab can be seen which would be at the end of the gym as to not impede the use of the full height gym space. This area would be used for some of the general purpose rooms and could double to create viewing platforms of the action within the gym. Again it is pulled back from the façade to create a clean delineation between structure and enclosure.

Edge Conditions on the East Edge (Oval)

Edge conditions looking at the transition between levels through the use of a stair case which protrudes from the skin of the building to interact with the conditions of the site. The transparency of the building allows for users to view into and out of the building connecting the two sporting centres of the site. Break out spaces for offices split over two levels to allow the users to control their environment and working space.

Louvres are used to increase natural ventilation and control it within the office space. Second level features sliding glass doors which allow the entire skin of the façade to peel back to open it up to the environment. This would create an amazing open feeling and would be wonderful during pleasant weather. The lower floor has a fixed lower panel to ensure that there would be no water penetration from either the rain or site flooding due to heavy rain fall and the natural basin in which it sits.

Columns are set away from the façade like in Mies van de Rohe work. This creates a cleaner façade and doesn't confuse the tasks of structure and environment enclosure. It also creates a number of opportunities within the building in regards to the change in façade which impacts upon the depth of space beyond. The columns then regulate this space and create spaces of varying depth which lend themselves to different uses. Such as the large one for an office with a desk or a meeting space, the smaller areas could be used for shelving or left blank to promote the use of that space as a break through into the exterior to allow one to view the oval and all its life and variation.

Looking at a curvilinear roof form and a structural support system for it.

Idea of a concrete slab system supported by steel columns, possible detailing of slab to column connections. Slab is thickened and has integrated beams running under the slab to increase strength at column points and would create a "waffle" effect on the underside of the slab when viewed from within the gym.

Two variations on the roof from. Roof being looked at to provide additional viewing areas for the oval and to create a view out to the ocean. One being a free standing cantilever system and the other "crashing" like a wave over the top of the building with steel cables restraining it downwards not only to restrain the structure but to continue the visual element to the ground to provide variation and cover. It would also honestly express the structural role of the elements and link it to the idea of the ocean more obviously yet trying to be poetic in its execution.

Previously the curved section of the roof form was looked at to be turfed and capable of supporting a live load encountered during a sports match or event, but through the structural analysis (through Arch 1261) with Waldo the depth of this would need to be between 500 and 1000mm!! This was obviously not ideal or a workable option. So the roof became simply a shelter with the slab forming the surface upon which spectators could view from.

Looking at Wall systems in the Gymnasium for retaining the earth and creating views into the gym from the Oval (East) side.

Looking at redesigning the ceiling of the existing grandstand to reinforce its strength, replace the worn timber and more closely link it to the new structure with the striations of colour shown in the brick reflected through to the new structures. This could be done by painting the steel columns one colour and then at these heights paint them then colour of these brick ribbons. These ribbons of colour expressed throughout the site would establish a set of datum which would give the eye a constant set of lines to establish itself from, it would also reflect the new buildings back to the old. It would further illustrate the fall of level over the site and create an emphasis of the sites fall.

This would help to address the idea of reciprocity and create a number of opportunities when addressing threshold especially for the gym with this change in levels and the ground falling away from the site towards the park. Entrances at different heights could offer different things, like the park entrance be more sheltered and look at interior/exterior created by the enclosed tree canopy and the soaring gym space creating a juxtaposition between the two spaces. Or by looking at the differences and similarities in the way they shelter pedestrians as they pass through the site. Obviously materiality between the gym and the park could be used to complement or contrast each other and thus make another statement, probably most strongly about how the building views its responsibility to the community and area through its response to the park, a natural and community area. The use of timber cladding and sun shading would be applicable and most likely necessary due to this being the North-West corner of the site and to continue to respect the park and its integral function to the site and the community.

The change in levels and heights could also be played upon when creating the ramped entrance to the gym hall to allow for equal access opportunities and to create a different experience when entering the building allowing pedestrians to view the interior space and its life (through its use and sports events) before they have a chance to interact with it.

King St Newtown - Art Gallery

This was by far my favourite project in terms of the outcome.
I started with an exterior which was slices of interior and exterior like utzons controlled spaces, but the interior I had envisioned was more like Villa Muller stretching between levels.
The site's shape was so unique I was instantly drawn to it and its subtle beauty. This was something I definately did not want to lose and in fact draw out.

By framing views within the building as well as on the video screens along the rear of the building allowed for very controlled views which either increased privacy or forced the viewer to discover what lays beyond. Again an idea taken from Utzon. My outcome, with the clarity of hindsight, seems to be almost Libeskind-esque but that could be due to it's shape more than its language and aesthetics.

The front facade is entirely closed but is made to engage the public. The awning has been retained to respect the continunity of the street and for the publics benefit as there is nothing worse than ducking quickly past a shop in the heat of the day or the wet of the evening. The street level contains maps and information about the gallery and the street art and murals around the site, community notice boards and other community focused iniatives.

The top of the building has been reinstated to replace what was lost and to respect the two buildings next to it. The front upper faced is a video screen which mimics the buildings next to it during the day creating a respectable and calm facade, whilst during the evening plays performance art, as well as webcams from around hotspots in the world with fresh young art as it happens.

The art the building displays is of Melbourne Street Art and Banksy, an unknown persona in the UK who does phenomenal work.

In many ways the rear of the building is infact the front of the building and so is treated as such with a welcoming entrance. The building uses ramps to allow for easy access through out the space as well as provide unique views and places for artworks.

The modification of the open/closed system was in reaction to the siting of the buildings around it which creates a much more interesting built form.

The workshop on the second floor has a large opening to promoteinteraction between the users and the public, with the office also looking on to it but private from the rest of the gallery.

The storage space on the ground floor again is open to allow for viewing and light with the kitchen leading off it to serve both the living quarters and the gallery.

The living space is layered behind this including large open windows which are again focussed and angled to include and preclude certain views, with plenty of room for the owners friends to stay.

The performance space is a bold, large area not seen from inside the gallery but instead from its roof terrace or from one of the video screens.

The video screens around the gallery are touch-screens which either play art works on a loop, a featured selection or a performance going on. This allows the gallery to show artworks it would never be able to otherwise due to location, size or cost. Due to the nature of graffiti artworks it is very site based and so these webcams would allow a viewer to experience the art happening in Melbourne, New York, London and beyond. They can even show an artwork in progress without the normal constrictions.

I saw this gallery as being for the community of Newtown, both the gerneral community and the younger section of the community interested in street art, clearly supported by the council in its wonderful murals and public art works.

WEEK 13: FINAL IMAGES

Ratan Tata's Office: His Background in steel inspired me to make a big steel box which has weathered and aged as exposed to the elements through the large window and the slits in the building. The high-backed corporate couch near the lift is more of a traditional Western office layout with a sitting area. The lift when present creates a wonderfully sculptural element protruding from the wall with no sign of supports. It is separated from the client not by partitions but by space and the large window allowing winds to dissipate any noise from the people waiting. He has a couch near his work space to allow for discussions with people who com to see him and his actual work space is hidden from the main chamber by breaking out and providing magnificent views.

Meeting Space: This space is to allow the two clients to come together as equals and eat or have a discussion. This is a simple space as even though these are two very powerful people there is a great deal of power in a simple, quite, calming space which allows you to escape from your job or other pressures. The space features recycled bamboo and along with the rough cut mountain stone this creates a natural and serene feeling to the space. The table is situated in the central area of the room but is still concealed and safe to discuss matters of the heart or secret business.

Zhang Yin's Office: This space like the Meeting Point is full of natural materials, mainly recycled bamboo and glass. The bamboo not only reflects her cultural background but also that of her business nature. By using recycled bamboo we reflect her passion for recycling which has made her a fortune beyond reasoning yet also create a calm, serene, open, natural space which I see as being very fitting with her personality.

Overall: A common set of materials has been used to not only link the spaces but to also denote that the status of the two clients, although both very powerful, is equal and that they are amongst company which will know their pressures and quest for achievements. This also creates a familiarity between the two spaces which makes the spaces feel more friendly to the clients when they visit each other.

The lift on the lower space, that of Zhang Yin, will wait for 30 seconds for you to explore her space and the lift to the upper space, for Ratan Tata, will wait for you for 1 minute, so no sticky beaking! They are private offices after all! And keep within the elevator safety rails or no liability can be taken!

WEEK 12: DINING TABLE + UT ELEVATOR

The dining table is made in the Japanese tradition where it is a low table which must be used only by sitting on the floor. Due to their background I was influenced by an Eastern idea of calmness as this is for their relaxation away from the rest of the world. This creates a balance between not only the spaces but also to ensure both clients remain respectful of each other. It represents their respective power is no greater than the others and as such it has a raised decal which not only further represents this (similar to a yin yang symbol) but is also used to serve food from. A large communal plate sits in the center with two smaller plates sitting on the raised sections. Again by sharing their status as equals is reaffirmed.

The elevator exudes power through its steady purposeful movement as well as the crystal material it is made from. Its ceiling and roof are all the more impressive with this material and creates an interesting space to off set the dining area. each clients space is different and unique in its own way so the smaller section is more private and dynamic but the larger space is a greater supplement to the living space.

WEEK 12: USEFUL DESIGN TIPS

One: Ask your friends! They often know or know someone else who can help you out of a sticky situation.

Two: Plan it out! If you have a clear view of what you are trying to make then you'll find the whole process that little bit easier and no need to waste time making that mover work when you don't actually need it!

Three: Play it through! Make sure to jump in your level heaps to play it. You can work out any bugs and make sure all the floors are flush. Its especially good to jump in and out whilst trying to fix up that lighting situation or entrance to make sure the small change you made works so you can move on to the next thing.

Four: Learn the controls! Go into SketchUp and UnrealEd and just play about using the controls for changing views by panning, scrolling, zooming and rotating. It makes things much easier to understand and avoids any panics later while you are trying to complete your masterpiece!

Five: Buy a laptop! Next on the list for me. So much easier to get all the programs on it and it saves wasting time waiting for a computer in the labs!

Six: Sleep! And plenty of it.

WEEK 11: ELEVATOR MODEL

These images are of my elevator created in SketchUp. It is a fairly enclosed regular shape except for the roof and ceiling, at least at first appearance. Like our three clients they are not as they seem. The elevator is able to split into 3 separate and distinct sections to carry a person to their desired and individual destination. As such the roof and ceiling reflect this lively movement and create a free flowing visual of the essence of the lift's function; unrestricted movement. On another level it shows the constant flux of our world, most importantly that of the economy and stock markets as well as the power of an individual. In the market today there is guaranteed to be winners and losers, but these clients not only ride the peaks of these highs but help through their vast power and resources to pull other people up the slope towards financial security and prosperity.

Note: the timber cube is to represent the dimensions of the avatar in Unreal Tournament, which was used to model the 3D interactive spaces.

Some really powerful and iconic images to kick off with to show that this guy is REALLY in the big league. $1.8 billion to charity is huge but you don't get a real sense of the impact that has until the numbers of bicycles, glasses and scholarships are included. Wow! A serious impact as that is only part of what he has done! It gives a real idea about the serious power this guy wields and the impacts he can have on the wider community around him. Finally, American or Australian governments prop up failing businesses such as car manufacture when it provides around 4000 jobs or takes serious the voice of lobbyists at this number. But a work force of 250,000 is seriously impressive! Especially considering the part of the world these people live in and the opportunities that would otherwise not be available to them. This equates to a serious impact on the local and regional community and also helps to feed 250,000 families! That's quite probably over 1 million people! Now thats people power!

"Everyone knows" that Oprah and J.K. are the richest women in the business world, but that in fact is not true and they are both surpassed by a woman who effectively recycles scrap paper and resells it. She takes a waste and turns it into not only a salable item but a highly profitable one! Her power comes from the waste and consumerism of America which is unlikely to slow down anytime soon thus ensuring her ongoing power base remains uninterrupted. Ideas:
Ratan Tata is more identifiable to a Western mindset as a modern multi-millionaire as he has built his fortune on highly technical and modern products and services. He is obviously very forward thinking with his venture into alternative fuels and the purchase of undersea telecommunications cabling especially considering the increased applications of such cabling through the internet and other technologies. Due to this purchase he is able to effectively let the money come in from his service as the consumer pays for the use or time share of such a technology and so frees up his time for other pursuits. His ability to pilot very expensive and very fast aerocraft is also appealing to and impressive to a western male outlook and so increases his perceived status which is another form of power which he wields.

Summation:
All three hold vast fortunes in their grasp and not through family connections, inheritance or exploitation but through honest hard work, forward thinking and risk taking. All three are from nations that the Western World would perceive as being "a developing nation" or a "third world country" in the language of the 80's. Yet this old idea must be abandoned! They are quite clearly above the average standard of their respective countries but also above even the elite of "developed nations". Their fortunes come from sources which one might not instantly recognise as so profitable but obviously that is one of the reasons why it is so profitable, as no-one else has thought of it. Their power lays more in their innovation and resourcefulness than their vast monetary reserves.
